Good Boys

When a group of middle school age friends try to work the social circuit the results are very funny. In Good Boys it is interesting to see how information about life is interpreted by these kids. This movie is smart, raunchy, sweet and very funny. I liked this film much more than expected.

The Night Before

Looking for the perfect Christmas party, the friends in The Night Before get a little more than expected. Their age and lifestyles don't quite fit the party mode they used to. As relationships evolve, the movie takes on a sweet tone. This movie says a lot about friendships and maturing. We also learn that babies like rap. Cute movie.

The Happytime Murders

The raunchy comedy The Happytime Murders is a disappointment. The story of crime in the land of puppets and humans had so much potential, but so much of the story and dialog fell flat. Such a shame.

Deadpool 2

I had forgotten how raunchy the first Deadpool movie was. Deadpool 2 continues in the same style. The character is so inappropriate, that it almost gets old. The jokes and snark are still there and I do like the characters. The story is typical superhero stuff. This was an OK rental. Glad I waited to rent it.

The To Do List

Graphic, honest and very funny, The To Do List is a coming of age story that focuses on sex. The class valedictorian is feeling good about working through her to-do list before leaving for college until she is asked about losing her virginity. In a panic, she starts to research sex the way she researches any task. The to-do list grows in a humorous and tactical fashion. This film is raunchy, explicit and very funny.Great cast too. Worth a look.

Wild at Heart

Opening with a very violent scene, Wild at Heart sets the tone for the crazy road trip of a young girl in love with an excon. There are pronouncements of love and hate amid scenes of violence and graphic sex. A bizarre ride from David Lynch with many outstanding performances.

The Comedian

Playing an unlikable character, Robert Di Nero is effective as an insult comedian in his later years. In The Comedian, his character battles the popularity of an obnoxious character in almost every encounter with the public. He meets a woman with her own issues and they develop a relationship. Family and friends both play a part in the growth and demise of their relationship. I liked their chemistry and the ending was as it should be. A good rental.

Bad Santa 2

I remember thinking Bad Santa was funny. Bad Santa 2...not so much. This is a poorly written, raunchy, vulgar and pointless heist film that was not funny and had no redeeming qualities at all. A talented cast was wasted on this awful film. Such a disappointment.

Late Bloomer

I don't mind a raunchy comedy, but The Late Bloomer is a strange story where sex is the main character. When a young man goes through puberty at a late age, the story takes a nice guy and turns him into a jerk. This story had a lot of potential, but the execution was to sophomoric for me. I tried.

Bad Words

The word is motivation. m-o-t-i-v-a-t-i-o-n In the film Bad Words motivation is key. Set at The Golden Quill Spelling bee, the motivations of all of the characters are cleverly fleshed out and resolved. I was surprised by how well this was done. Jason Bateman gives a solid performance. A bit dark, and a young actor holds his own in scenes with the veteran actor. I really liked this film.

Filth

When a corrupt police officer tries to win a promotion as a means of getting his wife back, things do not go very well. In Filth we watch a man drowning in sex, drugs, alcohol and corruption. Nothing good is going to come of things no matter how hard he tries. Dark film.

A Million Ways to Die in the West

Rude, vulgar, sweet, vulgar, offensive, vulgar, funny, vulgar and clever...oh did I mention vulgar. A Million Ways to Die in the West is quite a ride.The story is a bit lame, but the performances are great, and every once in a while there's a good bit. And oh so vulgar.

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa

I feel like I keep saying that I liked a lot of movies more than I expected this year. None surprised me more than Bad Grandpa. I watched it because of an Oscar nomination for makeup & hairstyles. The Jackass crew delivers a very funny, very inappropriate, very raunchy, very sweet movie. Johnny Knoxville straps on old man makeup and takes off on a road trip from Nebraska to North Carolina with a 9 year old posing as his grandson. They play out uncomfortable situations in a hidden camera style to the unsuspecting people they encounter. Watch the credits for the reveals. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Color me surprised.
