Farenheit 451

The film Fahrenheit 451 reminded me of reading the book when I was in high school. A young man in law enforcement rebels against the culture of book burning. Lots of fire. Disturbing story. Good rental.

Hotel Artemis

In a futuristic sci-fi story, Hotel Artemis is an exclusive emergency room for criminals. The premise is super weird, but after a while I settled in and it grew on me. The performances are very good, I wish I liked sci-fi more. Well done.

High-Rise

A truly bizarre story in an equally bizarre setting is told in the film High-Rise. A man moves into an apartment building full of strange folk and strange events. Tom Hiddleston's performance made this worth watch for me. So weird.

Tomorrowland

After seeing Brad Bird at Tribeca Film Festival I was looking forward to seeing Tomorrowland. This film starts strong with visions to the future, AI, gadgets and strong characters seeking a better world. In the third act it is reduced to robot battles and sermons about saving mankind from itself. In all, well done, but a bit preachy at the end. Loved the visuals.

Mad Max: Fury Road

The visual feast that is Mad Max: Fury Road impressed the shit out of me. A chase out of the Capital is eye-popping and action packed. We get to know the characters while traveling with them at break-neck speeds. There is gunfire, explosions and blaring music as the good guys flee the bad guys. This film immerses the viewer in a world of struggle, survival, hope and comaraderie. I could watch this one again.

The Zero Theorem

Terry Gilliam is a master of unusual storytelling and amazing visual effects. His latest film, The Zero Theorem is worthy of his reputation. Qohen is in search of the meaning of life and desperate for his "call". Management is unsympathetic, but a teenager lends his knowledge and energy where he can. A sumptuous film that challenges the imagination.

The Congress

When Robin Wright is told her career can benefit from digital image capture, she reluctantly takes the deal. In The Congress she shoots forward 20 years to see how her image is used and affects the art and culture. This is conveyed in animation. This film is trippy and creative. Wild concept.

The Giver

The concept of a future with no feelings is explored in The Giver. The concept is transmitted well with black and white. This world is presented as utopian and sanitary, but becomes increasingly creepy as The Receiver becomes more aware of the truth. A wonderful cast takes on a tricky story.

Snowpiercer

Snowpiercer was nowhere on my radar. Thanks to the chatter on Twitter I went to see it. What a pleasure! A visual extravaganza, this futuristic story is gritty, violent and creative. The performances are outstanding and the action never stops. What a film, one of the best this year!
